Nevada Fall: A Yosemite Waterfall Wonder
Nevada Fall, one of Yosemite's iconic waterfalls, plunges 594 feet from its edge near the granite dome of Liberty Cap. It forms a part of the Giant Stairway, with Vernal Fall being the lower step. As part of the Merced River system, Nevada Fall flows throughout the year, unlike many other waterfalls in the park that dry up by mid-summer. For distant views of the falls, Glacier Viewpoint and Washburn Viewpoint in the high country offer stunning glimpses.
Hiking to Nevada Fall
The Mist Trail
To reach Nevada Fall, hikers pass by Vernal Fall on a 5.4-mile journey that includes a 2,000-foot elevation gain and 600 steps along the Mist Trail. This is one of Yosemite’s most popular hikes.
The John Muir Trail
Alternatively, hikers can take the John Muir Trail to reach Nevada Fall without tackling the Mist Trail’s steps. Although this route is a 4-mile one-way hike, it offers a different experience. The National Park Service (NPS) estimates that the hike to Nevada Fall takes five to six hours. Hikers should be well-prepared with enough water (three to four quarts per person), high-energy snacks, and sturdy hiking boots.
Hiker Experiences and Tips
Recent hikers have widely praised the Nevada Fall hike, valuing the views of both falls encountered along the way. Many recommend descending via the John Muir Trail due to its gentler grade and absence of slippery mist. Most reported that the hike consumes much of the day and advised bringing hiking poles, quality footwear, and plenty of water.
