Introduction to Drake Park
Drake Park, named in honor of Alexander Drake, one of the town's founding figures, serves as a central hub for community gatherings. It's the perfect spot for takeout meals before a float on the Deschutes River or simply a serene place to relax under the shade of ancient ponderosa trees. Visitors can enjoy throwing a Frisbee, taking a leisurely stroll along the river, or heading from downtown to the nearby bars, food cart pod, and shops along Northwest Galveston Avenue.
Mirror Pond and Surrounding Features
Thanks to a dam near Northwest Portland Avenue, the river flow slows down, forming the picturesque Mirror Pond. The area features paved pathways, including a recently constructed boardwalk that extends about half a mile along the waterfront. Additional paths meander past old logging equipment, providing a glimpse into the region's historical logging industry.
Activities and Events
During the summer, Drake Park hosts Munch & Music, a live music event with food vendors, drawing large crowds on Thursday evenings in July and August. Throughout the year, the park is a popular spot for picnics, leisurely walks, and community events such as Pride celebrations and classic car shows. In the winter, the park's frosty landscapes become a favorite subject for landscape photographers.
Visitor Experience
Many visitors come to Drake Park to stretch their legs, enjoying the park's pleasant, pretty, and lovely atmosphere, especially after shopping or dining downtown.
Getting Here
Finding parking can be challenging, particularly on beautiful days, as there are limited parallel parking spots along the park's length. Alternatively, you can park downtown and enjoy a short walk to the park. Cycling through the park is also a fun and convenient option. However, be sure to walk your bike over the wooden footbridge that crosses Mirror Pond to Harmon Park on the river's west bank.
Hours and Admission
Drake Park is generally open during daylight hours, and admission is free for all visitors.
