Discover the Solitude on Pilot Butte's Base Trail
To find solitude, try the Base Trail that winds for about 1.5 miles around the lower flanks of the volcano. You'll encounter only a handful of people at most. Some Bendites will link the Base Trail and Nature Trail together for a 3.5-mile workout. — Tim Neville
Experience Bend's Unique Volcanic Landmark
There are only a few cities in the country that can claim to have a volcano within their limits, and Bend is one of them. This is thanks to Pilot Butte, a cinder cone that rises about 480 vertical feet over the city streets on the east side of town. This pint-size state park, covering approximately 114 acres, holds a special place in locals' hearts as a popular spot for short hikes before and after work. It is one of the first places they take visitors to showcase the beauty of Central Oregon.
From the 4,100-foot summit, you can enjoy fantastic, 360-degree views of the high Cascades, Newberry Volcanic National Monument, Smith Rock, and the surrounding desert. A display at the top of the butte points out the various mountains you can see. On a clear day, these views can span hundreds of miles, from Mount McLoughlin in the south to Mount Hood in the north.
Recent visitors have remarked that the hike is one of the best in Bend for the views. A trip to the top at sunset can be particularly rewarding.
Know Before You Go
Pilot Butte is generally open from sunrise to sunset and is situated off Highway 20, known as Greenwood Avenue in town. There is no fee or permit required to visit. A parking lot on the east side of the base is open year-round and provides access to a mile-long hike to the top, which can be done either by following the steeper, dirt Nature Trail or via a paved road. Be aware that a gate will block this parking lot after dark, so ensure you leave before then.
From spring until late fall, you can drive up the road to the summit, which can be accessed from the westbound lane of Greenwood, on the south side of the butte. Please remember to drive slowly and watch out for pedestrians, pets, and cyclists.
