The Transformation of the Old Mill District
The Old Mill District derives its name from its historical roots. In 1916, just a few years post the founding of Bend, the first of the town's large mills began operations here. This marked the start of a timber boom, as workers floated logs down the Deschutes River, converting the wood into lumber, crates, and other products. However, by the early 1980s, the timber industry had collapsed, leading to the abandonment and deterioration of the mills and adjacent buildings. Today, the area stands revitalized as one of Bend's most vibrant locales, featuring more than 60 shops, restaurants, a movie theater, and more. The Hayden Homes Amphitheater in the district has hosted prominent national acts like Old Crow Medicine Show, Tyler Childers, and Dave Matthews Band. The three-smokestack powerhouse building, once vital to mill operations, now houses an REI store, symbolizing Bend's significant transformation.
Dining and Shopping
The Old Mill District offers a diverse array of dining options. For instance, Rapa Nui brings a South Pacific-inspired dining experience, while the ever-popular Ben and Jerry's offers its famous ice cream. The retail scene is predominantly comprised of franchises such as Victoria's Secret, American Eagle, and Savory Spice. Yet, unique establishments like Confluence Fly Shop, a fishing store with an in-house bar, also add to the district's charm.
Activities and Experiences
Many visitors combine shopping with a leisurely walk around the area. A well-marked path, which includes a footbridge over the Deschutes River, helps form a loop that leads back to the heart of the Old Mill District. The area also hosts thematic events, such as paddlers floating down the Deschutes dressed as witches for Halloween or participating in the Holiday Lights Paddle Parade in December, irrespective of weather conditions.
Visitor Feedback
Visitors appreciate the variety of shopping options available, often labeling it as some of Bend's best. Additionally, the district's ambiance during winter, adorned with festive lights and holiday music, makes it a cozy place to explore.
Hours
The Old Mill operates year-round. The majority of stores are open from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. Monday through Saturday, and from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Sunday. However, individual business hours may vary. Concerts are typically scheduled during the summer and early fall.
Location and Parking
The district is situated approximately one mile south of downtown Bend, with some historical areas like the Box Factory situated closer. The Box Factory also features restaurants, bars, and a secondhand outdoor gear shop among other businesses. While most visitors opt to drive and park at the Old Mill, cycling from downtown is a convenient alternative, especially during concerts, thanks to well-marked bike lanes.
