Carmel River State Beach

A mile south of Carmel Beach and downtown Carmel-by-the-Sea, Carmel River State Beach is another beautiful waterfront area nestled on Carmel Bay.

Scenic Features

This mile-long stretch of sugary soft sand is framed by rocky bluffs and scenic tidepools. The beach includes the Carmel River Lagoon, where the Carmel River meets the ocean, and the Wetlands Natural Reserve, a haven for bird-watchers. Visitors can observe a variety of waterfowl and songbirds in this area. The adjacent waters are marine protected areas, safeguarded like terrestrial habitats and maintained by state and national parks.

Monastery Beach

If you stroll all the way to the southern tip of the park, you will encounter Monastery Beach, a part of Carmel River State Beach, also known as San Jose Creek Beach. This spot is popular for diving and kayaking. However, it is crucial to exercise extreme caution as riptides are common and swimming can be very dangerous. Swimming is generally not advisable at Carmel River State Beach, so visitors are encouraged to admire the scenery, take leisurely strolls, and sunbathe rather than wade into the water. The water remains fairly cold throughout the year due to the mild climate in Carmel.

Visitor Tips

There are public bathrooms available at the beach. However, previous visitors have noted that parking is extremely limited. You will likely need to find street parking in the surrounding neighborhood.
