Overview of Pfeiffer Big Sur State Park

Not to be confused with Julia Pfeiffer Burns State Park or Pfeiffer Beach, Pfeiffer Big Sur State Park is adjacent to the Los Padres National Forest and is situated on the western slope of the Santa Lucia Mountains.

Highlights

Similar to other state parks in the region, Pfeiffer Big Sur State Park boasts redwood groves, open meadows, and waterfalls. However, what distinguishes this park is its inland location. Unlike Andrew Molera State Park, Julia Pfeiffer Burns State Park, and Garrapata, which offer coastal treks, Pfeiffer Big Sur is situated farther inland, providing fewer ocean views. Instead, the park's main water feature is the Big Sur River, which flows through the entire park and is a prominent sight on several hiking trails.

Trail Options within Pfeiffer Big Sur State Park

Pfeiffer Falls Trail

The most popular trail in the park is the 1.5-mile hike to Pfeiffer Falls. This trail is known for its stunning redwood groves and a beautiful 60-foot waterfall. For an extended hike, consider adding the Valley View Trail to your itinerary. This half-mile-long trail branches off from the Pfeiffer Falls pathway and leads to a lookout point with a bench that offers views of the Big Sur Valley and as far as the historic Point Sur Lightstation.

Strenuous Hikes

If you're seeking more strenuous options, consider the 3-mile Buzzard's Roost loop or the 8-mile Mount Manuel Trail. Buzzard's Roost takes you through more redwoods and concludes at Pfeiffer Ridge. In contrast, the Mount Manuel Trail is a challenging climb that ascends to the 3,379-foot-tall Manuel Peak.

Visitor Tips

Recent visitors have been captivated by the forest that constitutes Pfeiffer Big Sur State Park and recommend it as a top camping destination in Big Sur. Opinions vary regarding Pfeiffer Falls, with some finding it underwhelming and others noting the park's crowded conditions. The trails' difficulty also prompted mixed reviews, so it's advisable to bring sturdy shoes and ensure you're physically prepared for the hikes you plan to undertake.

The park is easily accessible from Highway 1 and is clearly marked by a Pfeiffer Big Sur State Park sign.

Parking and Fees

Parking at the park costs $10 per vehicle.
