Introduction

Hikers can explore the Rainbow Falls Trail in its entirety, stretching 6.7 miles to Mount Le Conte. However, many prefer the 5.6-mile out-and-back trek to the waterfall itself. Standing at 80 feet, Rainbow Falls is the tallest single-drop waterfall in the park, and on sunny days, visitors can enjoy colorful rainbows created by the mist.

The Hike

Trail Details

The initial two-thirds of the trail to Rainbow Falls is a steady climb. During this journey, hikers traverse boulder fields, cross two footbridges, and witness patches of old-growth forest. Upon arrival, there are numerous rocks ideal for resting and taking in the view. However, hikers should exercise caution as the area can be slippery due to mist, algae, and winter ice. It's advisable to appreciate the waterfall from a safe, dry distance.

Hiking Experience

Recent hikers have commented that the trail's steady climb is manageable and the return hike is easy due to the downhill gradient. They also pointed out a small waterfall that appears before reaching Rainbow Falls, urging others to continue past it. Many hikers have praised the stunning views, and some have reported bear sightings along the trail. To ensure safety, visitors are advised to make noise while hiking to avoid startling bears and to remain aware of their surroundings. For more information on bear safety, consult the NPS website.

Location

The trailhead for this popular Smokies hike is situated on Cherokee Orchard Road, just before the Roaring Fork Motor Nature Trail transitions into a one-way loop. Pit toilets are available in the parking area.
