Scenic Beauty and Activities at Mount Tabor
Mount Tabor is a dormant volcanic cinder cone situated 5 miles east of downtown Portland, offering a worthwhile visit despite the distance. At its summit, Mount Tabor presents breathtaking views of both downtown Portland and Mount Hood.
Trail Options and Attractions
Travelers can choose from three different trails to reach the top of Mount Tabor and explore the park. Along these trails, visitors will encounter three reservoirs, which historically served as the city's primary source of drinking water. For those less interested in the views and hiking, Mount Tabor Park hosts the annual Portland Adult Soapbox Derby. Every third Saturday in August, racers in whimsical cars speed down the park’s hills, vying for top honors.
Visitor Experiences
Past visitors have cherished their long walks through Mount Tabor Park. Many highlight the stunning views and the challenging 293 steps to the summit. Be prepared for a significant uphill trek to enjoy these scenic rewards.
Practical Information for Visitors
Mount Tabor Park is free for all visitors. Driving to the park is an option, but be aware of limited parking, as there's only one parking lot and scarce street parking. A better alternative is to bike or take the No. 15 bus to the park. On-site amenities include restrooms, picnic tables, and a playground. For more details, visit the City of Portland website.

The park operates daily from 5 a.m. to 11:59 p.m. However, vehicle access is restricted past 10 p.m., and cars are not allowed in the park on Wednesdays at all.
