The Bailey-Matthews National Shell Museum: A Gem of Marine Life and History
Expansion and Exhibits
In 2020, the Bailey-Matthews National Shell Museum underwent a significant expansion, introducing 11 new aquarium exhibits on the ground floor. These exhibits include mollusks, a giant octopus, living shells, and touch pools. Despite the damages caused by Hurricane Ian, which flooded the ground level, the museum managed a temporary reopening of its original second-floor exhibits in February 2023. The second floor features the Great Hall of Shells, showcasing a wide variety of specimens from around the world. The hall also offers assistance in identifying any seashells visitors might find at nearby beaches.
Popular Exhibits
Among the museum's well-loved displays are the sailors' valentines—intricate 19th-century shell art created by Barbadian women for sailors to take home to their loved ones. Another notable exhibit depicts the life of the Calusa Native Americans, who resided near the Southwest Gulf. The Calusa utilized shells for tools and building materials, providing a fascinating glimpse into their daily lives.
Visitors' Impressions
Prior to the hurricane, visitors often remarked that the museum surpassed their expectations. They valued the interactive exhibits and found the information presented, alongside the expertise of the museum staff, to be exceptionally informative.
Temporary Reopening and Admission
For its temporary reopening in the spring of 2023, the Bailey-Matthews National Shell Museum is accessible from Tuesday through Friday, between 11 a.m. and 3 p.m. Note that these hours are subject to change. During this period, admission is free, though a suggested donation of $10 per adult and $5 per child aged 17 and younger is appreciated. Additionally, on-site parking is complimentary. The museum staff aims to fully reopen the facility by late 2023. For the most current information, visitors are encouraged to check the museum's official website.
