History and Resilience of the Sanibel Lighthouse

The Sanibel Lighthouse has been in service since 1884, guiding vessels into San Carlos Bay. This iconic landmark on Sanibel Island's eastern tip, now nearly 140 years old, has endured significant wear and tear. Hurricane Ian in September 2022 caused one of its four legs to shear off at the bottom. Despite this damage, the leg has been found and is undergoing repair, reinforcing the lighthouse's status as a symbol of the island's resiliency. Unfortunately, the two picturesque, historic lighthouse keeper homes were swept away by the hurricane. The light tower remains the centerpiece of a popular recreational area that fronts both the Gulf of Mexico and the bay, which is now closed with no projected reopening date.

Sanibel's 32-Acre Recreational Area

Beach and Amenities

In addition to the lighthouse, the 32-acre area features Sanibel's most developed beach. It is a favored spot among windsurfers, anglers, and families due to its various amenities. Visitors can enjoy a picnic area with grills, shaded pavilions, restrooms, showers, bayside fishing pier, and nature trail. Parking costs $5 per hour; however, cyclists and pedestrians can access it for free.

Visitor Experiences

Recent travelers have had mixed experiences when visiting the lighthouse. Some found it did not warrant a long visit and were disheartened that climbers are not accommodated. While the surrounding beach is noted for excellent shelling opportunities, it can become crowded, complicating parking. Others appreciated the lighthouse as a photo opportunity and enjoyed the fishing pier.
