Introduction to Cathedral Rock

Cathedral Rock is known as one of Sedona's four vortexes, with the others being Bell Rock, Airport Mesa, and Boynton Canyon. Some believe that these vortexes are spots where the earth emits energy, fostering healing, meditation, and self-exploration. Although all of Sedona is considered a vortex, certain areas like Cathedral Rock are believed to have the strongest energy. Many hikers have claimed to experience tingly sensations here; however, others report feeling nothing.

Hiking Cathedral Rock

The 1.2-mile out-and-back trail to Cathedral Rock, located approximately 2 miles west of the Chapel of the Holy Cross, is very popular and often busy. The hike can be strenuous and challenging, requiring a scramble over rocks on an incline in certain areas. However, once you reach the top, the views are spectacular, although solitude is unlikely given the popularity of the site. Ensure you wear proper hiking boots, as the sandstone and loose rocks can become slippery. The hike to the top of Cathedral Rock generally takes about an hour. The summit is perfect for taking photographs of the surrounding red rocks, offering excellent opportunities even for amateur photographers.

Tips for Hiking

Since there is no shade along the trail, the best time to hike Cathedral Rock is during the spring or fall when temperatures are mild, typically in the mid-60s to 70s. Hiking during the summer, when temperatures can reach triple digits, is not recommended. Regardless of when you hike, be sure to bring plenty of water to stay hydrated.

How to Get to Cathedral Rock

Parking at the trailhead is very limited. The best way to access the trail is by taking the Sedona Shuttle, which departs from two free park and ride lots. The shuttle is a convenient, eco-friendly option for exploring some of Sedona's favorite trails. To reach Cathedral Rock, take the shuttle from the North State Route 179 park and ride lot. Note that there is no parking in the residential areas. Shuttles run from Thursday to Sunday, from 7 a.m. to 5:30 p.m.

By using the shuttle, you can avoid purchasing the Red Rock Pass required for parking at the trailhead, which costs $5 per vehicle.
