Sand Flats Recreation Area Overview
Sand Flats Recreation Area spans 9,000 acres and was developed in 1995. It is managed through a unique partnership between Grand County and the Bureau of Land Management. The area features several hiking trails, 146 campsites, and serves as one of the closest access points to the La Sal Mountains.
Off-Roading and Mountain Biking
The area is renowned for its four-wheel-drive and mountain bike trails, which climb steeply over sandstone rock formations. The famous Slickrock mountain bike trail runs through Sand Flats, along with popular four-wheel-drive trails such as Hell’s Revenge and Fins and Things. Several local off-road businesses operate in the area, offering rental services for four-wheel-drive vehicles. Note that some routes are intended for experienced drivers only. Alternatively, visitors can hire guides to navigate the technical trails. One highly-rated tour and rental company is High Point Hummer & ATV.
Hiking Recommendations
Past visitors who aren’t interested in off-roading or mountain biking often recommend hiking the Juniper Trail, which offers beautiful views.
Camping
Sand Flats boasts 140 first-come, first-serve campsites that cost $15 per night, per vehicle. Additionally, there are 6 group sites available for $80 per night, which can be reserved online.
