Discovering the Coachella Valley Preserve
The Coachella Valley may seem like a barren desert at first glance, but a closer look reveals over 20,000 acres that are much more than just sand and brush.
This expansive area encapsulates the smaller, 880-acre Thousand Palms Oasis Preserve, which features over 25 miles of hiking trails. Along these trails, visitors might encounter rare wildlife such as the Coachella Valley fringe-toed lizard, as well as lush palm woodland oases and desert wetlands that bloom with wildflowers during certain times of the year.

Thousand Palms Oasis
The Thousand Palms Oasis is a must-see destination within the preserve. Steps descend to a raised boardwalk offering a short stroll above a marshy area nourished by water from the San Andreas Fault. The flourishing vegetation and towering palms create a verdant sanctuary, leading to the McCallum Trail.
McCallum Trail
The McCallum Trail is an easy, flat 1.5-mile out-and-back path that takes hikers through the desert to McCallum Pond. It's important to note that after leaving the oasis, you will be exposed to direct sunlight for the majority of the trail, so be sure to prepare for the conditions.
Location and Parking
The Coachella Valley Preserve is situated approximately 17 miles east of Palm Springs in Thousand Palms. Visitors must park along the adjacent road since the parking lot is not available for use. Exercise caution when parking and crossing the busy road.
Hours and Tickets
Although the preserve is free to explore, a small donation is appreciated to support ongoing preservation efforts. Hours of operation can vary with the seasons. For most of the year, the preserve is closed on Mondays and Tuesdays. It remains open from 7 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Saturdays and Sundays.
Facilities
Visitors will find a restroom available, although it does not have running water.
