Plan Ahead

Due to its small size, La Jolla Cove beach can grow crowded quickly, so plan to arrive early in the day.

The Jewel of La Jolla

La Jolla Cove, located across from La Jolla Shores, stands out more for its striking beauty and snorkeling reputation than for its beach size. This ecologically protected area teems with vibrant wildlife both in and out of the water. Sea lions are frequently spotted close to the cove's bluffs and tide pools, and they often venture onto the beach.

Snorkeling and Sea Caves

Beginner snorkelers will find La Jolla Cove an excellent spot to hone their skills. Advanced snorkelers can explore the sea caves along the bluffs, but should only do so with a guide. If you're less experienced but still wish to see the caves, consider taking a kayak tour or visiting the Cave Store. Here, a human-made tunnel takes you directly inside the Sunny Jim Cave. Even if snorkeling isn't your plan, the scenery alone makes this place a must-visit.

Ellen Browning Scripps Park and Children's Pool Beach

Visitors also recommend a stop at Ellen Browning Scripps Park, located above the cove, for a picnic or a walk along the bluffs. Don't miss the Children's Pool Beach, which offers even more chances to view wildlife. Although the area is accessible for sunbathing and swimming, most people avoid it as it has become a sanctuary for seals and sea lions. The water is often filled with sharp rocks and strong currents due to offshore reefs, so the best way to experience Children's Pool is by walking along its seawall.

Hours and Tickets

La Jolla Cove is free to explore and open 24 hours a day, although swimming is not recommended without a lifeguard present. The cove is equipped with showers and bathrooms, and there are parking lots nearby. However, finding a close parking space can be challenging. While there's no fee to access the beach, there is a charge for touring the cove via the Cave Store.
